The transformation zone in the endocervical canal, here, has undergone cell changes, from columnar to squamous epithelium. On closer inspection you can see the metaplastic squamous cells are distinguishable from the regular squamous cells of the cervix due to their darker staining cytoplasm and their lack of honeycomb appearance.
